What is Periodontal Surgery?
There are different types of periodontal surgery offered, depending on the severity of your gum disease. You’ll first undergo a deep clean to remove tartar and bacteria from your teeth and gums. This gives your periodontist an easier canvas to work with. They may also perform a procedure known as root planing to smooth out the surfaces of the roots of the teeth.
One form of periodontal surgery is flap surgery. This is when your periodontist lifts the gums off of your teeth to remove the buildup of tartar underneath. The gums will then be stitched back into place to fit properly around your teeth.
When the bone around the root of a tooth is damaged, a bone graft may be needed. The damaged bone is replaced with a new bone. This helps hold your tooth in place and helps it regrow properly.
When the gums have receded, this can cause damage and too much of your tooth may be exposed. Soft tissue grafting attaches new tissue from a different part of your body to the area where gum recession has occurred. This reduces the risk of any further damage from happening and covers up any exposed roots that you may have.
